Rituals
Dark Thaum Rituals
The Knotted Cord (Level 1)
This Ritual has saved many infernalist from trial and execution, by silencing accusers.
System:
The infernalist must knot a length of rope while reciting the name of whomever she wishes to silence. Unless the target beats the infernalist in an opposed Willpower roll, he is unable to denounce her.
Aport Object (Level 1)
This ritual allows the practitioner to magically enchant an object. The next time the Infernalist desires the object in her hand, all she has to do is speak a magic word and the object appears.
Warding Circle (level 2)
This Ritual prepares an area for infernal magics by creating a protective circle to defend the infernalist from a demon's anger.
System: The warding circle is a complicated diagram of astrological symbols that have to be drawn with special chalks while an incantation is intoned. The infernalist can either create a temporary circle, which takes 30 minutes to complete, or makes a permanent circle, which takes several nights. Once the circle is completed, the infernalist must stand inside it and activate the ritual magic with a prepared phrase or prayer. So long as the infernalist remains within the enchanted space, she is protected from any attack by an infernal creature unless the creature can beat her in a resisted Willpower test.
Botching the roll to enact this Ritual can be fatal and damning. A botched Warding Circle offers no protection at all, though the infernalist will believe that her ward is sound.
Video Nefas
The caster entreats demons to answer his questions, revealing secret knowledge or unearthing mysteries. Most demons are not omniscient, however, and this ritual's effectiveness is limited by the demon's knowledge. This ritual has no visible effect, but individuals with Auspex sometimes claim to have seen imps or homunculi whispering into a thaumaturge's ear. The caster must break a dried bone in two for this ritual to take effect.
System: The number of successes accumulated on the roll determines the extent of the information the demon must reveal. The caster may ask only one question of the demon, but he may cast this ritual as many times as he wants.
1 Success Yes or No
2 Successes A short sentence
3 Successes A descriptive synopsis (3-4 sentences)
4 Successes A complete answer
5 Successes An encyclopedic answer, which may include the topic's history, interesting personages involved or even apocryphal lore never before known to mortals or Cainites.
Summon Tivilio (level 3)
This ritual summons Tivilio, the Injurer of Cats. Of course, a cat must be given in sacrifice. Like most demons, Tivilio is evil and tricky; despite its limited power, it is vile and cunning.
Thaumaturgy Rituals
Encrypt Missive (level 1)
To insure that messages remain secure against prying eyes, the Tremere sometimes use this ritual to encode documents magically. Created during nights long past to send messages across battle lines or hostile borders, this ritual is not used as often in the age of electronic communications, but is occasionally used to communicate between chantries. Also, this is a fairly common ritual — many anarchs of the Anarch Free State seem to have learned it, and use it to encrypt graffiti messages to others of their kind.
System: The thaumaturge writes the message in blood over the course of a night and speaks the name of the person he wishes to read it. Only the writer and the person to whom the letter is addressed can read the document, but numerous "counter-rituals" exist that can be used to confound the magic of this ritual. To any others who observe the letter, the writing simply appears as gibberish.
Widow's Spite (level 1)
This ritual causes a pain, itch or other significant (but not deadly) sensation in the subject. Similar in effect to the old "voodoo doll" effects, this ritual is used more out of scorn or malice than actual enmity. In fact, it requires a wax or cloth doll that resembles the target, which bleeds when the power takes effect.
System: The ceremonial doll must resemble, however rudely, the victim of the ritual. It produces no mechanical effect, other than a simple physical stimulus. The caster may determine where on the subject's body the pain or itch appears.
The Open Passage
Walls, locked doors and even sealed vaults cannot stop a thaumaturge with the Open Passage ritual. The caster smears snake or vermin excrement over the surface in an intricate pattern, which takes an hour to complete. Once finished, the caster becomes insubstantial with respect to that surface – she can walk through a wall or door, yet can still touch and interact with anything attached to it (like a mirror or wooden shelf).
System: Open passage lasts for one turn, so the caster must be quick in stepping through the barrier.
