Short History
A 15th century merchant's second son Marcus was given opportunities in education denied to
many others of his time. He took well to his studies and decided to take them further. As was
the custom he spent his time at the local monastery learning from the monks while his father
and brother were away on business. During his stays with the monks he found himself more
and more interested in their theological teachings. Marcus began spending more and more
time with the monks and less and less time with this family. His father dismayed when Marcus
declared he was more interested in his faith than his father's business but with his eldest son
following in his footsteps he accept the loss of his shy son as simply one less mouth to feed.
For the longest of times Marcus stayed at the Monastery or travelled to others, sharing his
academic knowledge and skills as well as developing his own faith. The promising future of a
merchant was pushed aside and Marcus embraced his new life. For many of the time this
would be the end of his story but this was not to be for Marcus. One night a strange visitor
claimed hospitality at the Monastery. A routine occurrence this was of no interest or
consequence to anyone. Anyone except Marcus. One morning when the monks rose for their
chores they found Marcus and their guest had both vanished into the night. The visitor was
none other than Naira, a Malkavian prophet. Plagued by visions and prophecies the tortured
soul had decided he needed a tool to record his wisdom. Marcus had no choice in the matter
of course and found himself the prisoner of the insane prophet. The tender mercies to which
he was subjected are best left to the imagination. Blood bound, tortured, indentured and
psychologically traumatised, Marcus found his faith tested to the limit. Finally the prophet
decided to make his scribe a permanent addition to his entourage and embraced him before
he could succumb to the ravages of old age. Now well into his elder years the change was the
final strain upon the much damaged psyche of Marcus and he found himself reborn and his
faith renewed. Now a cainite with a different view upon reality Marcus found himself and his
religion changing as the years rolled on. Suddenly the rantings of the mad prophet began to
make sense. Seen through the cracked mirror of the Malkavians it was all so clear. Together
they travelled far and wide, wherever the visions of the prophet would lead them. For
centuries the prophet and the scribe wandered Europe until finally the Inquisition caught up
with them. Marcus escaped into the night, alone for the first time in centuries. His sire dead,
their haven burnt to ashes and nothing to his name but his twisted faith and failing memories.
He spent the following years travelling from domain to domain, plying his trade by providing
his academic skills to those willing to pay. With no shortage of vain kindred requiring a scribe
Marcus had a string of employers to protect and provide for him even if it was only just.
Having learned a valuable lesson from the death of his Sire and his losses, Marcus was much
more careful in his interactions with other kindred and far more careful in his acquisition and
distribution of resources. He learned the value of keeping in the background and a strong
sense of paranoia began to creep into the cracks of his shattered mind. Convinced the
Inquisition were lurking around every corner, Marcus travelled far and wide, never staying in
one place long and carefully administering to his holdings. With the passing of the centuries
and the development of the Malkavian condition, Marcus has carefully positioned himself
within the Camarilla, assuming their masquerade and traditions to be the most sensible tool
for survival.
The Present
Marcus settled in Birmingham quite some time ago and whilst his paranoia often takes him
away on sojourns to other places to avoid the imaginary threats he perceives, he has
become a regular feature, some would say a part of the furniture. Marcus is careful to never
draw too much attention to himself and always attempts to maintain a quiet air of dignity
and helpfulness. He makes his money taking minor academic jobs on for mortals and kindred
alike. Whether it's history information, research tasks or a theological essay he can and will
provide services in return for minor boons or numeric considerations as the situation
requires. Some times his memory lapses can lead to awkward situations or his paranoia can
lead him to jump to conclusions and take actions that many wouldn't believe him capable of.
Many kine and kindred have found themselves unknowingly on the receiving end of his wrath
for reasons which make sense only to him and they are always none the wiser in the
aftermath. His twisted faith, damaged mind and survival strategy have bred a dangerous
beast whose humanity is waning and he is perhaps only one step away from unleashing his
insanity upon all who cross his path. To the kindred of Birmingham he's the quirky Malkavian
elder who keeps himself to himself and sometimes forgets a thing or two. If only they knew.
Status Background -
It is commonly known that Marcus is an elder of the Malkavian clan and a longstanding
member of Birmingham's kindred population. His relative stability for one of the moon
touched and his generally helpful demeanor and charming harmless old man persona have left
him in good standing in the most part with his local community. Throughout the years he has
helped various kindred and kine in various positions and the rewards have been many. It is
known that he is well versed in many subjects and willing to share his knowledge for a price.
Many long standing relationships still remain between him and former clients in the form of
ongoing correspondence. At the behest of those in power he has also helped to control and
direct the other childer of Malkav, a service which whilst unofficial he is happy to perform, for
a price of course.
Resources Background -
The son of a merchant, Marcus is no stranger to making and maintaining money. Despite his
change of career Marcus has retained his knowledge and instincts and has amassed a suitable
amount of money to keep himself comfortable in modern nights. Unlike many kindred of his
age he has kept vaguely abreast of the financial situation and is not easily caught out by
inflation or the dissolution of long standing assets. In terms of a monthly income, Marcus
owns multiple properties, some of which he rents out (see holdings merit) and acquires money
through the academic work he does on a freelance basis. Most usually these assignments take
the form of a local college or university contacting him as a respected author in a particular
field and requesting a specific project. Much to the irritation of his kine clients but the
satisfaction of his kindred clients who use him for the same tasks they always have, he does
not and will not use computers and will only ever correspond through hand written means or
in person.
Holdings Merit -
Marcus currently has access to 4 properties owned by him. The most modern of which is a
storage container within a 24 hour storage complex. The complex has all the perks you would
expect from such a location and the actual storage container is in the basement level of the
building. Small but secure this site is often used by Marcus as an emergency haven or simply a
place to hide and think or work. Inside the container is very sparse with a wooden locker of
books, writing equipment, a small desk and an ancient looking but still comfortable arm chair
and a single lamp. Another property owned by Marcus is a small run down building in one of
the student areas of Birmingham which is currently on loan to a chinese family who own and
operate a take away from it. This is part of the monthly income Marcus receives and also
makes a good emergency feeding ground. The parents are getting increasingly concerned
about their sons night terrors and their daughters worsening mental state however. In a
poorer area of the city densely populated with high rise apartment buildings Marcus has
another holding. A single apartment on the top floor. Currently occupied by a drug addled
youth with a variety of mental issues. Marcus rarely claims rent from his tenant but often
visits when in need of somewhere to stay in an emergency or a discrete source of sustenance.
Hidden inside the apartment Marcus has everything he needs to make this into a temporary
haven, including heavy duty blackout curtains and some heavy duty locks on the doors.
Finally Marcus owns an old cottage on the outskirts. Whilst an old building this has been
heavily modified over the years and whilst there is little of note on the outside the inside is
full of armoured doors, hidey holes and library spaces.
